Daimler AG says it has hired Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu to help conduct an audit of its diesel emission control systems that was requested by the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

The review is intended to prove Daimler has not used unlawful devices to manipulate diesel emission certification tests. Der Spiegel says Deloitte is checking internal documents and email traffic involving Daimler’s diesel engine developers.

DOJ’s request follows a lawsuit filed early last month on behalf of U.S. owners of the carmaker’s diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The complaint alleges that Daimler used an unspecified “defeat device” to evade emission limits. Daimler has denied any wrongdoing.
