Daimler AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group are launching their StarRides premium ride-hailing service in China.
StarRides will debut this month in Hangzhou, where Geely is based, with a fleet of 100 vehicles consisting mainly of Mercedes-Benz S-, E- and V-Class models. Services will be expanded to other Chinese cities next year.
Drivers will be trained by professional chauffeur companies and have licenses for online ride-hailing services. Some will be capable of speaking English to cater to international users.
The 50:50 joint venture is operated by the carmakers’ Daimler Mobility AG and Geely Technology Group subsidiaries. Tom Gu was hired in September to serve as CEO of StarRides, which will have a staff of 80 people.
The companies announced the joint venture in October 2018 and plan to launch other mobility services in China. Geely is Daimler’s largest shareholder, with a 9.7% stake in the German carmaker.
