Consumer Reports has reversed itself and now recommends Tesla Inc.’s Model 3 after the carmaker performed a remote software update to fix the electric car’s erratic braking.
Last week the magazine blasted the car’s 152-foot stopping distance from 60 mph, the worst for any car tested to date. But a Model 3 with the updated software trimmed 20 feet off that distance, putting the car’s performance in the middle of results typical for midsize cars.
CR marvels at Tesla’s “unheard of” ability to improve braking characteristics by remotely updating software, a first for any car tested to date.
The initial tests also found excessive wind noise, uncomfortable rear seats and a distracting touchscreen display required to adjust almost everything in the car. CR says Tesla CEO Elon Musk says those issue are already being addressed through design improvements.
