The Fuel Cell Electric Bus Commercialization Consortium will begin testing 20 fuel cell-powered buses next year at two California transit agencies.
The 85-kW fuel cell powerplants will be supplied by Vancouver-based Ballard Power Systems Inc. Fitted into New Flyer Industries Inc.’s 40-ft Xcelsior XHE40 buses, the fuel cell-electric system will provide a driving a driving range of about 500 km (311 miles).
The Alameda Contra-Costa Transit District and Orange County Transportation Authority transit authorities each will get 10 of the buses. Supported by a hydrogen fueling infrastructure provided by Linde Group, the buses can be refueled in less than 10 minutes, according to the partners.
The project will be funded by the California Air Resources Board and several local offshoots. The non-profit Center for Transportation and Environment will provide project management and oversight.
Ballard and New Flyer have collaborated on several fuel cell bus programs in the past. Ballard says buses powered by its fuel cell systems have logged more than 6.2 million miles of commercial operation.
