Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' diesel-powered Ram 1500 fullsize pickup truck has earned a best-in-class U.S. government combined fuel economy ratings of 28 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg in combined highway/city driving.
The EcoDiesel model with four-wheel drive also has best-in-class ratings of 27 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg combined.
The truck's all-new 3.0-liter V-6 diesel makes 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The oil burner features a 16.5:1 compression ratio, aluminum cylinder head and cylinder block made of compacted graphite iron.
The base half-ton EcoDiesel RAM is expected to sell for about $30,000, or $4,500 more than the same model with a standard gasoline engine. FCA notes that the diesel-powered RAM delivers better fuel economy than other fullsize trucks and some midsize pickups.
