Chrysler Group LLC says it will double its production of diesel-equipped Ram 1500 fullsize pickup trucks to meet demand.
Currently about 10% of Ram trucks are being fitted with 3.0-liter V-6 diesels supplied by Fiat SpA's VM Motori unit in Cento, Italy.
Chrysler aims to boost that rate to 20% by November at its Ram assembly plants in Warren, Mich., and Saltillo, Mexico. Automotive News calculates the increase will mean a yearly production rate of about 70,000 units.
The diesel Ram has been a hot seller since Chrysler introduced it in February. The truck has a U.S. highway fuel economy rating of 28 mpg. Chrysler says almost 60% of the model's sales have been to former owners of General Motors and Ford pickup trucks.
