Chrysler Group LLC says it will add a third shift and 1,100 workers at its Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit in November, several months earlier than previously planned.
The company says the accelerated plan reflects strong demand for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs built there. Chrysler also will keep the factory operating during the traditional two-week summer shutdown.
The facility will add production of a Maserati SUV and a diesel-powered version of Grand Cherokee next year.
