Chevy Reveals Lighter, Smaller Equinox Crossover with Diesel Option

General Motors Co. says the third-generation of its high-volume Chevrolet Equinox compact crossover vehicle is lighter, smaller and more efficient than the outgoing model.
Chevy took the wraps off the 2018 model Thursday evening during the autumn equinox at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.
Due to launch in the first quarter of 2017, the redesigned Equinox is about 10% lighter (400 lbs) than the outgoing model. Overall length has been shortened by four inches to 183 inches, but Chevy says there is 3.5-cu-ft more of interior space.
A new all-wheel-drive system can be disconnected from the rear axle when not needed to improve fuel efficiency, according to GM. The crossover also has a 10% tighter turning radius to make parking and low-speed maneuvers easier.
Three 4-cylinder engines will be available, including a 1.6-liter diesel that GM says is the first compression-ignition unit offered in a compact crossover in North America. The engine makes 136 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque and is expected to get a U.S. fuel economy rating of 40 mpg on the highway.
The two gasoline powerplants are turbocharged 1.5- and 2.0-liter mills, which replace the current Equinox’s 2.4-liter four-banger and 3.6-liter V-6. The new 2.0-liter engine generates 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the smaller engine makes 170 hp and 203 lb-ft.
The diesel and 1.5-liter engine are mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter mill is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
New safety features include forward collision alert, lane-keeping assist with lane departure warning, low-speed automatic braking and surround vision. A special rear-seat alert system reminds occupants to check the rear seat for children before exiting the vehicle. And a teen-driver package allows parents to set controls and review an in-vehicle report card to encourage safer driving habits.
Exterior styling cues reflect Chevy’s new design language that was launched with the current Cruze, Malibu and Volt cars. This includes a two-part radiator grille, elongated “projector-beam” headlights, horizontal taillamps and extensive chrome accents.
The interior is highlighted by a redesigned instrument panel, a low windshield base and optional denim-style seat fabric. The rear seats tilt forward to provide a flat floor for easier cargo loading.
GM says it has sold more than 2 million Equinoxs since launching the vehicle in 2004. The second-generation model bowed in 2009.
Equinox sales are down 18% this year through August. The dip is attributed to the vehicle’s aging styling, increased competition and GM’s decision to reduce sales to rental car companies.
Following its North American launch, the all-new Equinox will eventually be sold in about 115 international markets. The current model is sold only in North America.
