Daimler AG’s car2go unit says nearly 80,000 people have registered for the car-sharing service in Chongqing, China, since it was launched there less than two months ago.
During this time, there have been more than 40,000 rentals of car2go’s 400 Smart ForTwo vehicles—about one every 1.7 minutes. Company officials say the usage rate far exceeds initial expectations for the market, which is car2go’s first foray into Asia.
By comparison, car2go has signed up 100,000-130,000 subscribers in its largest European and North American metropolitan markets. But it took about five years to reach those levels.
With a population of 30-million people to draw upon, however, Chongqing dwarfs the size of its international counterparts.
