China’s BYD Co. plans to open an assembly plant for electric trucks in Ontario next year.
The company tells Bloomberg News the facility will build commercial vehicles such as garbage and delivery trucks. Initially most of the components used in the trucks will be shipped from BYD’s Chinese facilities, according to Bloomberg.
The plant is expected to employ about 40 people at launch, then gradually expand. Other details, including the plant’s location and BYD’s investment, will be announced in a few weeks.
BYD says it chose Ontario in part because of the province’s tax incentives. A spokesman adds that there are fewer barriers to entry for Chinese products into Canada than into the U.S.
Last month BYD completed the third phase of its 450,000-sq-ft factory in Lancaster, Calif., which now has the capacity to build 1,500 electric buses per year. Earlier this year the Shenzhen-based company opened a bus plant in Hungary, and it’s planning a new facility in France next year.
