Robert Bosch GmbH has opened a new innovation center in Lund, Sweden, that will focus on developing software and hardware for next-generation connectivity and security systems.

The facility will develop technologies for motorized two-wheelers as well as passenger vehicles. Researchers also will work on “cross-domain” programs that connect mobility with energy and building technologies such as "smart" homes, according to the supplier.

More than 50 Bosch engineers and technical experts already are working at the facility, which is housed within Lund’s Ideon Science Park—home to 2,700 scientists—and adjacent to the University of Lund.

Bosch expects the location and interaction with other researchers to spur greater creativity and cooperative projects with students, start-ups and established companies. It notes that Lund is the birthplace of several major technologies, including Bluetooth connectivity and biometric fingerprint scanners.

In 2015, Bosch spent €6.4 billion ($7.4 billion) on research and development, accounting for 9% of the company’s overall sales. It posted record sales of €70.6 billion last year, driven largely by booming demand for its automotive sensors.
