Elon Musk’s Boring Co. says it has nearly completed the construction of the first demonstration tunnel in Los Angeles for the underground shuttle system the company is developing.

Musk envisions offering free public rides in the high-speed hyperloop pods within a few months. But he notes that venture still needs final regulatory approval.

Boring plans to start digging a tunnel from Los Angeles to San Francisco next year. The company also has started work on a tunnel in Washington, D.C., with plans for an east coast network that runs through New York City and Boston.

Musk envisions a network of thousands of above-ground stations, each about the size of a parking spot, where passengers would board shuttle pods. The pods would then be lowered under the ground and merge into tunnel loop routes, where they could travel at speeds as great as 150 mph.
