Production will begin this summer at Avtotor's factory in Kaliningrad. The plant will assemble an unspecified volume of the cars from semi-knockdown kits supplied from BMW's assembly plant in the U.S.
Avtotor also assembles BMW 3, 5 and 7 Series cars and X1, X3, X5 and X6 SUV/crossovers from SKD kits. BMW sales in Russia are running about 20% below year-ago levels in a market that has plunged 38%, according to the Moscow-based Assn. of European Businesses.
