BMW AG plans in July to announce it will build an assembly plant in Mexico, according to Automobilwoche, which doesn't identify its source.
Multiple media reports over the past four months have indicated BMW is close to deciding where to build a second North American factory to supplement its SUV plant in South Carolina. Earlier reports indicated the company might erect the facility in the U.S.
Automobilwoche says the company favors Mexico because of its lower labor costs and attractive trade agreements. The newspaper says the BMW plant will be in Hidalgo or San Luis Potosi.
Last week Germany's Handelsblatt speculated that BMW also may equip the new factory to make Mini and next-generation 1 Series small cars. Both models will use the same front-wheel-drive platform.
The Wall Street Journal reported in February that BMW was in advanced talks about a $1.5 billion (€1.1 billion) factory to make 1 and 3 Series cars.
