BMW AG has agreed to help speed development of Colorado-based Solid Power Inc.’s solid-state batteries for electric cars. Details of the partnership weren’t disclosed.
The 5-year-old startup is pursuing next-generation battery technology that swaps proprietary inorganic materials for the usual liquid electrolyte. The resulting chemistry enables batteries the contain no flammable components and boast far greater energy density than lithium-ion devices, according to the company. The developers say their technology also can tolerate higher temperatures and doesn’t require a costly cooling system.
Earlier this year Solid Power moved into a larger facility in Louisville, Colo., with low-volume pilot production capability for materials, cells and prototype batteries.
Developers consider solid-state rechargeable batteries as the technology needed to extend EV performance, lower costs and reduce charging times. Fisker and Toyota both have said they plan to debut EVs that use solid-state batteries in about 2023.

Special Report: Toyota & Issues Electric
Although Toyota’s focus on hybrid powertrains at the seeming expense of the development of a portfolio of full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for the market could cause some concern among those of an environmental orientation, in that Toyota doesn’t seem to be sufficiently supportive of the environment, in their estimation. Here’s something that could cause a reconsideration of that point of view.
