BMW AG has begun marketing its i3 all-electric sedan in Japan through Amazon's online marketplace there, The Nikkei reports.
The carmaker also plans large-scale marketing campaigns with Amazon Japan, according to the newspaper.
BMW has been selling the i3 in Japan for a year directly through its Japanese subsidiary rather than its conventional dealer network. Customers who commit to buying the EV online are then contacted by BMW Japan to complete the paperwork and arrange delivery.
The i3 in Japan has a base price of 5 million yen ($41,700), or 5.5 million yen ($45,900) when a range-extending generator system is added.
BMW believes online marketing will expose the i3 to consumers who aren't aware of the car. The company is targeting relatively wealthy middle-aged buyers with concern about the environment, according to The Nikkei.
The newspaper notes that Japanese consumers are accustomed to making large purchases online.
