Severe winter storms sweeping through the South today prompted BMW AG and Kia Motors Corp. to cancel production late in the day and overnight at their American assembly plants, Automotive News reports.
BMW's plant in Spartanburg, S.C., suspended output of X3, X5 and X6 crossover vehicles. AN says Kia's factory in West Point, Ga., halted work at 5 p.m. because of weather-related parts shortages. The Kia facility makes Optima sedans and Sorento and Santa Fe crossovers.
Both companies say they may resume production Thursday morning if weather improves enough to permit works to reach the factories safety. Forecasters say continuing freezing rain is likely to cause very widespread power outages overnight.
