BMW AG and Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. are collaborating to develop next-generation electric powertrains and pool related purchase orders.
BMW notes that its requirements for future electric drives closely match those of JLR. The carmakers say partnering will enable them to cut costs through shared development, production planning and joint purchasing. Production of will be handled separately by each company.

The electrified drivetrains will be based on BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive system that will bow next year in the iX3 electric crossover vehicle. A joint team based in Munich will further develop the technology for next-generation models.
Each company currently offers one EV (the BMW i3 hatchback and Jaguar I-Pace). BMW aims to introduce a dozen all-electric models by 2025. JLR will begin offering all-electric and/or plug-in hybrid powertrains in all new models next year.
The companies also cooperate on engines, with BMW preparing to supply an 8-cylinder mill to JLR.
BMW briefly owned Jaguar and Land Rover in the 1990s before the British marques were sold to Ford in 2000. India’s Tata Group acquired JLR in 2008.
