BMW AG and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Co. are expanding a battery cell plant they opened just seven months ago in Shenyang, China.
The expansion will prepare the High-Voltage Battery Center to make batteries for BMW’s fifth-generation electrified powertrain. The batteries will go into the iX3 small crossover vehicle scheduled to begin production in nearby Dadong in 2020.
The partners opened the manufacturing center to supply batteries for plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW 5 Series midsize sedan being produced in Dadong. The companies have not revealed the battery plant’s original or expanded capacity.
The Shenyang facility is one of three battery cell factories BMW operates worldwide. The other two are in Germany (Dingolfing) and the U.S. (Spartanburg, S.C.).
