BMW AG and Stuttgart-based Durr Systems AG say they could increase production uptime, process quality and equipment efficiency by sharing paint shop data.

The intent is to reduce redundancy in data collection and data analytics. This can be accomplished by better using existing software and Industry 4.0 connectivity to monitor and evaluate paint shops, from individual robots and production cells to the overall operations.

The companies’ “smart paint shop” presentation won the award for process technique at this week’s Surcar conference on automotive body finishing in Cannes, France. The jury at the biennial event is composed of a 27-member technical board of supplier and carmaker executives.

While it is pointed out that using hard turning in place of grinding for case-hardened or induction-hardened steel components such as transmission shafts and gears can reduce both machining costs and time by as much as 70 percent or more, according to the people at Sandvik Coromant Co. (sandvik.coromant.com) such gains are achievable only if that hard turning (usually performed as a finishing or semi-finishing process) is performed with optimized insert grades.
