Chinese tech giant Baidu Inc. is partnering with California chipmaker Nvidia Corp. on a cloud-to-car platform to help aid the development of autonomous vehicle technologies.
The platform teams Nvidia’s Tesla P40 graphic processing units (GPU) and learning software with Baidu’s deep-learning cloud service. The Tesla P40 provides 47 tera-operations per second of inference performance. Nvidia says a Tesla P40 has more than 30 times the lower latency of a CPU, and a single server with 8 Tesla P40s delivers the performance of more than 140 CPU servers.
Last year Baidu began testing fully autonomous cars on public roads in Beijing and aims to launch sales of such vehicles early next decade. The company’s autonomous driving unit incorporates artificial intelligence, deep learning, big data, advanced hardware and high definition maps.
