Volkswagen AG's Audi unit has been granted a license by Nevada to test autonomous vehicles on the state's public roads.

Nevada issued a similar license to Google Inc. last May after becoming the first U.S. state to allow self-driving cars provided the vehicles have a back-up driver and a passenger on board.

Audi has been developing autonomous car technology for several years. In 2010 a specially equipped Audi TT sports car successfully completed the famed 156-turn Pikes Peak hill climb. The driverless car made the trip in 27 minutes.

The TT's vehicle's self-guiding system was co-developed in California by Stanford University and the Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Lab. Audi envisions the technology being used to control vehicles in stop-and-go traffic or park themselves in tight spots after the driver leaves the car.
