California-based startup Aptera Motors Inc. claims its latest three-wheeler electric car will be able to generate enough solar power to never need a plug-in charge.

The company estimates that solar panels built into the roof of its sleek Aptera two-seater will be able to harvest five miles of range per hour in strong sunlight. That’s as much as 44 miles per day on a cloudless day.
In August, Aptera also claimed its little runabout will be able to travel 1,000 miles per charge. But neither assertion can be tested yet, because the company is still trying to raise enough funding to build three prototypes.
The 1,800-lb car will be propelled by three in-wheel electric motors, each rated at 50 kW. Aptera hopes to begin marketing the car at a base price of $34,000 by the end of next year.
