Apple Inc. is leasing vehicles from Hertz Global Holdings Inc. to equip for tests of the company's technologies for self-driving vehicles, Bloomberg News reports.
Citing documents from the California Dept. of Motor Vehicles, the news agency says Apple is leasing a small fleet of Lexus RX450h SUVs from Hertz’s Donlen fleet-management unit. Both companies have declined to comment.
Earlier this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company’s secretive automotive program, which he describes as an important core technology. The company’s efforts are focusing on software, sensor and processing technologies, which it aims to sell to carmakers and suppliers.
On Monday, Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo driverless car unit inked a deal with Avis Budget Group Inc. for the rental car giant to provide maintenance services and fleet support for the self-driving vehicles the tech company is testing in Phoenix. Under the program, Waymo is offering pre-selected consumers free rides in Chrysler Pacific minivans equipped with autonomous-driving systems.
