Apple Inc. confirms it has dismissed more than 200 members of Project Titan, its secretive autonomous-vehicle development program.
The cuts, first reported by CNBC, anticipate a restructuring of the program under new leadership. Apple says some groups within Project Titan are being reassigned to other development projects within the company.
Last year Apple rehired Doug Field, a former executive who left in 2013 to serve as Tesla Inc.’s chief engineer, to head Project Titan.
The program’s focus appears to have shifted repeatedly since its existence first became public in 2015. Apple originally seemed intent on developing a self-driving vehicle and the software to operate it. By 2017, the company reportedly was concentrating on software alone.
