Apple Inc. is rolling out CarPlay, an in-car system that will enable users to access several iPhone functions directly through their vehicle's infotainment system.
Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will debut the new system this week.
Apple, which first announced the technology last year, says other carmakers that intend to add the system to their cars includes BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota.
CarPlay displays familiar iPhone icons on the car's existing display. When coupled with a software upgrade to their iPhones, the system allows drivers to activate Apple's Siri voice recognition feature through their vehicles' buttons or touch screens.
Siri can be used for hands-free access to music, podcasts and audio books or to make phone calls, display Apple Maps, listen to turn-by-turn navigation instructions, dictate messages and have text and e-mail messages read aloud.
