This week Altran Technologies SA, a French engineering and consulting firm, opened a passive-safety test center in Wixom, Mich.
The 15,000-sq-ft facility is the company’s first testing center in the U.S., joining the company’s main test center in Gratkorn, Austria, and a satellite operation in Augsburg, Germany. The Michigan center will focus on airbag testing, passenger compartment safety and pedestrian protection tests.
In addition to impact test equipment, the facility includes 3D digitization equipment and a full-size climatic chamber. The site also has an outdoor test track for impact and sensor testing. Alstom expects the center to conduct complete tests on four to five new vehicles annually.

The auto industry accounts for about 20% of the Altran’s business. Among its key customers are Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Honda and PSA. Altran, which has operations in some 20 countries, also works with aerospace, defense, energy, finance, life sciences, railway and telecommunication companies.
