General Motors Co.'s Buick and GMC brands will begin offering smartphone connectivity interfaces on select 2016 models equipped with GM's optional IntelliLink touchscreen display. The carmaker previously announced similar plans for Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles.
The applications will be compatible with Google Inc.'s Android Auto and/or Apple Inc.'s CarPlay platforms, allowing users to connect their smartphones to the vehicle's eight-inch center console display via a USB cable. Using the touchscreen or voice commands, customers can then play music, make and receive calls, receive and listen to e-mail messages, display navigation maps and get audio trip instructions through a vehicle's infotainment system.
Apple's CarPlay system will be available on Buick's LaCrosse and Regal sedans at the start of the 2016 model year. The same nameplates will add Android Auto later in the model year.
GMC will launch CarPlay on the 2016 Yukon SUV and Canyon and Sierra pickup trucks. Android Auto will be offered on some Sierra models at the start of the model year. The system will roll out later on all Sierras, as well as the Canyon and Yukon.
