On Sunday Audi AG signed memorandums of understanding with China’s biggest tech leaders to help accelerate development of self-driving car technologies and advanced mobility services in the market.
The Volkswagen AG unit notes the agreements between FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co. and Alibaba Group, Baidu and Tencent Holdings build on existing programs with each of the companies.
Audi and Alibaba are working on real-time traffic data and high-resolution 3D maps for self-driving vehicles. Next year Audi cars in China will offer Baidu CarLife, a smartphone connectivity alternative to Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto that offers free navigation software and connectivity to third-party apps. Audi also is working to integrate Tencent’s WeChat MyCar music and location sharing capabilities for the Chinese market.
The German luxury carmaker is rushing to develop next-generation technologies in China in particular because consumers there are more eager to embrace such innovations faster than those in mature markets such as Europe and the U.S.
