Volkswagen has been testing consumer interest for more than 15 years in a 21st century successor to the now-iconic microbus it introduced in 1950. The newest iteration—an all-electric model dubbed the I.D. Buzz,—was unveiled at the Detroit auto show last January.
Matthias Erb, chief engineering officer for Volkswagen Group of America, says a decision to build the latest version, which has received strong consumer interest, is expected before the end of 2017. He notes the car is likely to come equipped with connectivity and self-driving features.
