Toyota Motor Corp. says it has reduced the cost of building a small fuel cell-powered car to $50,000 from $1 million several years ago.
Chris Hostetter, who heads strategic planning for Toyota’s U.S. unit, tells a conference in Los Angeles that the retail price on the company’s first production fuel cell car will be under $100,000 when it debuts in 2015.
Toyota has been testing a fleet of 100 Highlander crossovers equipped with fuel cells. But the production model will be a Prius-sized small hatchback. Hostetter says the car’s styling will be derived from the FCV-R concept car Toyota showed at the Tokyo auto show last November.
Automotive News opines that Toyota may limit initial sales of the fuel cell car to California and New York—the only states with even a rudimentary hydrogen refue
