Toyota Cuts Fuel Cell Car Cost 95%

Toyota Motor Corp. says it has reduced the cost of building a small fuel cell-powered car to $50,000 from $1 million several years ago.
Chris Hostetter, who heads strategic planning for Toyota’s U.S. unit, tells a conference in Los Angeles that the retail price on the company’s first production fuel cell car will be under $100,000 when it debuts in 2015.
Toyota has been testing a fleet of 100 Highlander crossovers equipped with fuel cells. But the production model will be a Prius-sized small hatchback. Hostetter says the car’s styling will be derived from the FCV-R concept car Toyota showed at the Tokyo auto show last November.
