Honda Joins New U.S. Fuel Cell Group

Honda Motor Co. has joined H2USA, a partnership set up in mid-May between the U.S. Dept. of Energy and private sector to promote fuel cell electric vehicles.
The alliance is focused primarily on expanding America’s microscopic hydrogen fuel infrastructure, which currently totals only 54 refueling facilities, nearly half of them in California.
Honda joins inaugural H2USA members Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota, plus the Assn. of Global Automakers, American Gas Assn., California Fuel Cell Partnership, Electric Drive Transportation Assn., Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Assn., ITM Power, Massachusetts Hydrogen Coalition and Proton OnSite.
Honda has been leasing small numbers of fuel cell vehicles in the U.S. since late 2002. The company introduced its third-generation FCX Clarity fuel cell sedan in California in 2008. It currently leases about 200 of the four-seater electrics, virtually all in metro Los Angeles.
The 3,600-lb Clarity is fitted with an electric motor that makes 134 hp and delivers 189 lb-ft of torque between zero and 3,000 rpm. The car can travel about 240 miles on a fill-up of 8.6 lbs of hydrogen, delivering the equivalent of 51 mpg, according to Honda.
