The Trump administration has called for another round of talks with California regulators and an auto industry trade group about easing regulations on vehicle emissions and fuel economy.
The White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs will meet separately on Tuesday with the California Air Resources Board and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
The meetings are to review the administration’s proposal, which is expected to be announced publicly in the next several weeks. Officials tell Reuters the plan will describe several options but strongly favor one that freezes the further advancement of emission and fuel economy standards beyond 2020.
CARB says California—and a dozen other states that follow its lead—intend to enforce the current rules, which call for deep cuts in allowable carbon dioxide emissions between 2022 and 2026. The lower CO2 levels would push average real-world fuel economy to about 36 mpg from 25 mpg last year.
Reuters says the White House proposal is expected to include taking legal steps to strip California of its right to set its own emission standards for CO2.
