Volkswagen AG plans to operate its assembly plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, on overtime this winter to meet strong demand for the hatchback version of the seventh-generation Golf subcompact.
VW says it has it has more than 100,000 orders for the new Golf variant, which went on sale in November. Adding three Saturday shifts will increase output by 2,000 cars.
The German automaker's situation contrasts sharply with many of its European competitors, which are trimming factory payrolls, cutting shifts and closing plants.
