Volkswagen AG says it must sell about 1 million all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles per year by 2025 to meet carbon dioxide emission standards in its major markets. That volume represents about 10% of the group’s vehicle sales last year.
Other carmakers will be under the same pressure from tightening CO2 and fuel economy laws to electrify their vehicles too, Thomas Liebler, who heads electrified vehicle development for the VW brand, tells Automotive News.
VW currently offers three EVs and six plug-in hybrids that collectively generate roughly 5% of the company’s 2025 goal for sales of electrified vehicles. By 2020, VW’s lineup of such vehicles is expected to expand to 20.
So far the company has adapted traditionally powered vehicles for electric or hybrid systems. But it is developing a new modular platform called MEB that will enable designers to better optimize the cost, manufacturing and performance of next-generation electrified models.
