A circuit court judge in Virginia has rejected Volkswagen AG’s request to delay a trial about claims that the company deceived buyers by touting its cheater diesels as environmentally friendly.
VW contended two weeks ago that the trial would be prejudiced by “inflammatory” remarks by a lawyer who represents hundreds of VW customers. The lawyer compared the company’s backing of lab tests that exposed monkeys and humans to diesel fumes to the Holocaust during Nazi Germany.
Judge Bruce White rejected VW’s claim. He ruled that an impartial jury can be empaneled and set the trial to begin on Feb. 26. VW tells Reuters it will show that the plaintiff’s claims of financial damages are “extravagant and unfounded.”
