Volkswagen AG has spoken favorably this month about cooperating with the United Auto Workers to unionize its assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. But the company now emphasizes that the decision of whether to organize will be made by the factory's hourly workers, Reuters reports.
Jonathan Browning, CEO of Volkswagen of America, also tells the news service that the UAW's role is not a foregone conclusion, referring to possible representation by another unspecified union.
He notes that labor discussions are in an early stage and aren't likely to be completed soon.
Separately, Browning says VW expects to decide sometime this year whether to build a midsize crossover vehicle based on the CrossBlue concept unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January. He says that if the model gets the go-ahead if will be made in North America.
