Volkswagen AG’s upcoming ID.4 electric crossover vehicle will start at about $33,000 in the U.S.

VW is expected to unveil a production version of the compact model, which is based on the 2017 Crozz concept vehicle (pictured), in February. Global sales are due to start in the second half of 2020.

Built on VW’s MEB platform, the ID.4 will be slightly smaller than the Tiguan crossover, says Scott Keogh, who heads VW’s U.S. operations. He tells reporters that the ID.4 will have more interior space, thanks to the EV’s packaging advantages.

Keogh believes $33,000 will be the sweet spot for EVs because that’s about the average transaction price of conventionally powered new cars. It’s also the going rate for a mid-range Tiguan.

The two-row ID.4 will be imported from Europe for two years before production shifts to an $800 million assembly line being added to VW’s factory in Chattanooga, Tenn. The smaller ID.3 hatchback, which is due to launch next summer in Europe, won’t be offered in the U.S.
