Volkswagen AG has told its U.S. dealers not to sell any models that were produced in North America after Feb. 1 and equipped with the company's widely used 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, Automotive News reports.

A spokesman tells AN about 25,000 cars are involved. Affected models include the Beetle coupe and Jetta and Passat sedans. All are powered by engines made in Silao, Mexico.

VW decided to suspend sales of the engine after discovering an oil leak between the transmission and transmission oil cooler. The company blames a supplier for changing the specifications of an O-ring used to seal the two components together.

VW says repair parts will be available before the end of next week. The company also has alerted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for guidance on how to handle affected vehicles that have already been delivered to customers.
