Volvo Car Corp. is updating its vehicle subscription plan to include more models and give dealer’s greater access and flexibility.

The controversial Care by Volvo program, which was launched two years ago, is being challenged by a dealer group in California. The state’s Dept. of Motor Vehicles launched an investigation into the service earlier this month in response to allegations that it violates the carmaker’s franchise agreements with dealers.

The revised program will cut the time it takes dealers to qualify for the program, according to Automotive News. Dealers also will be able to provide vehicles directly from their lot to subscription members rather than special ordering them as was previously required.

Starting this autumn, subscribers can choose from five 2020 model vehicles (excluding top trim packages). The currently available XC40 compact crossover and S60 midsize sedan are being joined by the XC60 and XC90 crossover vehicles and V60 Cross Country wagon.

The top-end V90 Cross Country wagon and S90 flagship sedan are not eligible.

Customers pay a flat rate between $700 and $800 per month, which includes the vehicle lease, plus insurance, maintenance, roadside assistance and concierge services. Halfway through the two-year program, subscribers can swap their vehicle for another model.

Volvo says virtually all subscription customers to date have been first-time Volvo owners.
