Volkswagen AG and partner SAIC Motor Corp. have agreed to develop locally produced electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles for the Chinese market.
Under the pact, the companies will expand their factory in Anting to build such vehicles. The partners also agreed to expand local research activities related to plug-ins and fuel cells.
VW says the Anting plant will begin making a new, conventionally powered C-segment vehicle for the VW brand in 2016. The facility also plans to launch an all-electric version of the VW Lavida small sedan in about 2019.
