Venturi Automobiles SA in partnership with students from Ohio State University set two land speed records for electric vehicles last week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
The Venturi Buckeye Bullet-3 (VBB-3) streamliner averaged 341 mph over two flying mile runs with a top speed of 358 mph, both of which are records. The two runs are done in opposite directions to take into account wind effects.
The VBB-3 was built in 2013. But poor weather conditions the last three years prevented the vehicle from attempting a record during Bonneville’s annual speed trials.
Power for the VBB-3 comes from eight lithium-ion battery packs and a pair of 1,500-hp electric motors. Roger Schroer from the Transportation Research Center in Ohio was the driver during the record run.
The Venturi/Ohio State team was the first to break the 300-mph threshold with an EV in 2009. It broke its own record a year later with a top speed of 307 mph in the VBB-2.5 model. After making unspecified modifications to the car, the group hopes to eventually top 400 mph.
