The average price of standard-grade gasoline in the U.S. has climbed to $2.42 per gallon, up 19 cents since the beginning of the year, AAA says.
Today’s average is 10 cents below the year-ago level, according to the insurance and travel company. Current averages range from a high of $3.29 per gallon in California and Hawaii to a low of $2.17 in Arkansas and Missouri.
AAA says prices are rising because of shrinking stocks and growing demand as the winter driving season ends. Fuel prices are likely to continue climbing for the next few months as refiners conduct seasonal maintenance and adjust for warm-weather blends.
