The fuel economy of new cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. averaged a record 24.5 miles per gallon in January, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
UMTRI says the national average has improved steadily since the institute began tracking the data in 2008. Last month's level was up 1 mpg from a year earlier, 2 mpg from January 2011 earlier and 4 mpg from January 2008.
UMTRI bases its sales-weighted calculations on the federal fuel economy estimates posted on new-vehicle window stickers.
