Britain’s Dept. for Transport is mulling the idea of issuing green license plates for electric vehicles to distinguish them from the yellow plates used by piston-powered cars.
The idea is to make it easier to spot EVs, which may be eligible for such perks as cheaper parking or access to special driving lanes.

The Transport Dept., which is considering three possible designs (pictured), says the initiative also would help the U.K. reach its goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050 by raising awareness of EVs among motorists who aren’t yet driving one.
Skeptics, including the Royal Automobile Club, agree the sentiment seems worthy. But RAC says most drivers it has polled don’t think special tags would sway their own views about EVs. The club adds that it isn’t clear whether distinctive EV tags would foster resentment among drivers of diesel and gasoline vehicles.
Annual registrations of all-electric cars in the U.K. have jumped nearly 80% since 2017 to 25,000 units this year—or slightly more than 1% of the total market, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
