Uber Technologies Inc. intends to open a research and development center in Paris this autumn for its flying taxi program.
The ride-hailing company says it will invest €20 million ($24 million) in the facility over the next five years. Researchers there will focus on machine learning and computer vision technologies.
Uber aims to start pilot testing a fleet of vertical takeoff and landing aircrafts in Los Angeles and Dallas in 2020, with commercial service targeted for 2023. The company is working with a number of partners on the initiative, including NASA, Bell and Boeing’s Aurora Flight subsidiary.
