Uber Technologies Inc. has extended to San Francisco the public tests of autonomous vehicles it began in Pittsburgh three months ago.
The California tests will use a small number of specially equipped Volvo XC90 crossover vehicles and Ford Focus small sedans. Under California laws, each car must be piloted by two engineers, including a driver whose hands remain on the steering wheel.
Uber says tests in Pittsburgh to date have helped it improve system control software to better handle bad weather. San Francisco will present the cars with unusually heavy traffic density conditions, according to the company.
