The United Auto Workers union reports that its ranks grew nearly 4%, or 15,000 workers, to 430,900 members last year.
The union credits much of the gain to successful organizing activities outside the auto industry in such areas as higher education, gaming and commercial trucks. The number of auto assembly workers grew slightly in 2017.
UAW membership, which reached more than 700,000 people in 2002, hasn’t been above 500,000 since 2006.
