Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne has cancelled a planned appearance at the Paris auto show on Thursday.
The company provided no reason for the last-minute change in plans. But observers suspect Marchionne wants to be on hand for contract negotiations that will begin this week with Canada’s Unifor labor union. The union represents about 9,800 workers at three factories in Ontario.
Last weekend the union ratified a contract with General Motors Co. and named FCA its next target. Unifor said it might strike the company on Oct. 10 if it fails to achieve a new four-year contract by then. The union aims to extract a commitment from FCA to commit to produce next-generation products at its Canadian facilities.
Marchionne called off a trip at this time last year to the Frankfurt auto show after the United Auto Workers union chose FCA as its strike target for contract talks.
