President Donald Trump, saying revived trade talks with China went “very, very well” yesterday, plans to meet this afternoon with China Vice Premier Lieu He.
Reports say the two countries appear to be aiming to finalize a narrow pact and agree to revisit more central and difficult issues later.
China hopes to convince Trump to suspend his threat to hike tariffs in two steps between now and mid-December. The scheduled increases would raise current 25% tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods by five percentage points on Oct. 15. That increase is to be followed by new tariffs on Dec. 15 that cover the remaining $150 billion worth of goods the U.S. imports from China each year.
Key hurdles to a more comprehensive deal are U.S. demands that China tighten legal safeguards for intellectual property and end its practice of requiring U.S. companies to reveal trade secrets in return for the right to do business in the country.
